3 major updates from Sam Altman's congress hearing the last week!
ChatGPT creator and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urges lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence during a hearing.
Sam Altman, Founder and CEO of OpenAI, testified before the US Congress the last week on the imminent challenges and the future of AI technology.
In a two-and-half-hour hearing, Sam answered questions on privacy, technology, regulations, impact on jobs and the potential risks of AI on the society at large.
🗣️Here are 3 key takeaways from the hearing
1. AI could cause significant harm
Sam Altam urged Congress to impose new rules on Big Tech. It’s very for the CEO of a company to come out and say that his technology could harm the people.
Altman shared his biggest fears about artificial intelligence. He said: “My worst fears are that we cause, we the field, the technology, the industry, cause significant harm to the world. I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong.”
2. Impact on the job
He said in the past that inequality will increase because a lot of people will lose their jobs.
“There will be an impact on jobs,” Altman said. “We try to be very clear about that, and I think it’ll require a partnership between industry and government, but mostly action by government, to figure out how we want to mitigate that. But I’m very optimistic about how great the jobs of the future will be,” he added.
3. Regulation on AI
Altman, like many of his peers in the Big Tech have been calling, supported the idea of regulating the AI that would maximize the benefits of the transformative technology while minimizing the harms.
“We think the regulatory intervention by the governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models,” Altman said.
He suggested the US government might consider licensing and testing requirements for the development and release of AI models. Altman also said companies like OpenAI should be independently audited. “For a very new technology we need a new framework,” Altman said.
